Bricks Games — how to play and tips

Bricks is a modern take on the classic brick-breaker formula that started with Breakout and Arkanoid decades ago. Bounce a ball off a paddle to smash rows of bricks, clear the screen to advance, and work your way through twelve hand-built levels that each change the brick layout, the pacing, and the mix of hazards you have to deal with. It's built entirely in HTML5 canvas, runs straight in the browser with no plugins or downloads, and adapts its control scheme automatically for keyboard, mouse, and touchscreen play.

How to play

Desktop: move the mouse left and right to slide the paddle, or use the left/right arrow keys / A and D. Click, tap, or press Space to launch a ball that's waiting on the paddle. Mobile: drag your finger anywhere on the screen to slide the paddle, and tap to launch the ball. A LASER button appears on touch devices once you've picked up a laser power-up, letting you fire straight upward to chip away at bricks without relying on the ball alone. A PAUSE button is always available in the touch bar, and on desktop you can pause with Escape or P. The goal on every level is simple: keep the ball in play and clear every breakable brick before you run out of lives.

Levels and brick types

Bricks ships with twelve distinct level layouts — First Steps, Rainbow, Checkerboard, Fortress, Diamond, Minefield, Invaders, Steel Maze, Gold Rush, Final Stand, Spiral, and Heart — each arranging its bricks in a different shape and difficulty curve. Early levels are forgiving, with soft bricks that break in a single hit, while later levels mix in tougher bricks that take multiple hits to destroy and steel-style bricks that resist your ball entirely until you find another way through, such as a fireball power-up. Clearing a level's last breakable brick immediately advances you to the next layout, and ball speed increases gradually as you climb through the level list, so the game keeps demanding sharper reflexes and better paddle control the further you get.

Power-ups

Destroying bricks has a chance to drop a falling power-up capsule that you catch with your paddle. Eight of them help you: Wide Paddle stretches your paddle so it's easier to keep the ball alive, Multi-Ball splits your current ball into three at once for much faster brick clearing, Laser lets you fire upward shots from the paddle, Magnet makes the ball stick briefly to the paddle on contact so you can aim your next shot precisely, Fireball turns your ball into a fiery projectile that punches through multiple bricks in a row instead of bouncing off the first one, Extra Life adds another chance before it's game over, Slow Ball temporarily reduces ball speed so you can catch your breath on a hard level, and Shield throws up a temporary barrier at the bottom of the screen that saves a ball that would otherwise have dropped past your paddle. Four power-ups work against you and are worth avoiding: Shrink narrows your paddle, Speed Up suddenly accelerates the ball, Reverse flips your paddle's steering direction for a few seconds, and Fog dims your view of the play field. Reading the falling capsule's color and label before it reaches your paddle is the difference between a helpful pickup and a self-inflicted problem.

Scoring, lives, and combos

You start with three lives and lose one each time a ball falls past your paddle with no shield active — lose your last life and it's game over, with your final score and any new high score displayed on the overlay screen. Every brick you break adds to your score, with tougher brick types worth more points than the soft, single-hit ones. Breaking bricks in an unbroken streak builds a combo multiplier that boosts the points from each additional brick, so a controlled, sustained rally is worth significantly more than the same number of bricks broken in scattered, stop-start bursts. Clearing a level cleanly, without losing a ball along the way, is generally the fastest route to a high combo and a strong final score, which is saved locally so you always know the number you're chasing on your next run.

Tips and strategy

Angle matters more than speed: hitting the ball with the edge of your paddle sends it off at a sharper angle, which is useful for reaching bricks tucked into corners that a straight-on bounce would miss. Try to keep the ball toward the center of the play field rather than letting it skim along one wall, since a ball pinned against the side gives you far less time to react to sharp bounces. When you're offered a choice between multiple falling power-ups, prioritize Wide Paddle and Shield early in a level when you're most likely to lose the ball, and save Multi-Ball and Fireball for dense brick clusters where they clear the most bricks per second. On levels like Steel Maze and Fortress, look for the layout's one soft entry point rather than attacking the reinforced bricks head-on — breakout-style levels are almost always designed with a deliberate way in. Finally, don't panic when Reverse or Fog hits: both wear off after a few seconds, and a paddle held steady near the center of the screen will usually survive the disorientation better than a paddle chasing the ball in the wrong direction.
