How We Build & Test Our Games

What you can expect from every game and every article on this site.

Why this page exists

A game portal is easy to build badly: a pile of embedded games with no explanation, slow pages and adverts everywhere. We want OnlinePlayZone to be the opposite. This page describes the standards we hold our games and our writing to, so that you know what to expect and so you can tell us when we fall short.

Original games, not embeds

The games on this site are written for this site in HTML, CSS and JavaScript. We do not embed other people's games, copy their artwork or reuse their levels, names or sounds. Where we make a version of a classic idea, such as Sudoku, Snakes and Ladders or Chess, we implement the rules ourselves and give the game its own look, text and level design. Sound effects are generated in your browser rather than downloaded, and the artwork is drawn with CSS and SVG.

One standard for every game

We maintain a written game standard that every game has to meet. The main points are these.

How we test

Every game is opened automatically in a real browser at five screen sizes: two phones, a landscape phone, a tablet and a desktop. The checks look for script errors, missing files, content that is wider than the screen, controls that are too small to tap and games that fail to re-fit when the screen size changes. We also check the page around the game, including navigation, search and the layout of every page, at phone and tablet sizes. Our newest games have additional tests that play the game with real touch gestures, from the first level to the last, and run with a slowed-down processor to check smooth animation.

When a test finds a problem, we fix it and repeat the test. For example, a routine check once showed us that two games reported a script error as soon as they loaded, and another showed that many games left a large empty area on tall phone screens. We fixed both across the whole library.

Written guides, not placeholders

Every game page contains an original article that explains how to play, how scoring works and how to get better. Beyond the game pages, our guides section contains longer articles on strategy, history and skills, written for this site. We aim for accuracy and for useful, practical advice, and we avoid exaggerated claims. Where a topic involves safety, such as kite flying or screen time for children, we say so plainly.

No real money, no gambling

No game on OnlinePlayZone involves real money, betting, prizes or purchases. We do not publish casino-style games. Scores and levels are for fun only.

Advertising

The site is supported by advertising, which pays for hosting and the time we spend building games. Advertisements are kept away from game controls and are never placed inside the game area. We do not ask for any personal information to play. Details are in our privacy policy.

Updates and corrections

We keep improving games after they are published. When a bug is reported, we fix it and test again. When we find a factual mistake in an article, we correct it. The date at the top of each guide shows when it was last reviewed. If you spot a mistake, please tell us.

Accessibility and fairness

We try to make every game playable by as many people as possible. That includes clear colour contrast, keyboard support, large buttons, text that stays readable and a mute switch for sound. If you have a suggestion for a feature that would help you, we want to hear it.
